A New Devotional to Start Your Year
3m read
It seems the environment is on everyone’s minds these days. After all, it’s tough not to notice the historic flooding, raging fires, catastrophic cyclones, and drastic upheavals in nature that dominate our newsfeeds on a regular basis. Climate change is now framed as the greatest crisis of our lifetime, it’s taking center stage in international politics, with some even declaring it as World War 3.
If indeed life as we know it is about to be over and the human race along with all other living species on Earth are threatened with extinction, then how could it NOT be the most urgent and important issue of our age?
Elon Musk, one of the most innovative and forward thinkers of this generation, has made it the overarching mission of his life to solve this dilemma. He believes the solution is two-fold:
To fulfill the first objective, Musk created the company SpaceX which has as its stated goal to colonize Mars. And for achieving the second, he runs Tesla which aims to accelerate the world’s transition to renewable energy—namely with electric transport. This may sound like science fiction, but individuals like Elon Musk genuinely believe that ideas like these are the solution to what they perceive as mankind’s greatest threat.
The brightest minds of the world are applying their best energies, most creative ideas, and vast fortunes to solve this intractable dilemma. But what about us? As Bible-believing Christians waiting for the coming of Jesus, how ought we to respond to these things?
The restraining Spirit of God is even now being withdrawn from the world. Hurricanes, storms, tempests, fire and flood, disasters by sea and land, follow each other in quick succession. Science seeks to explain all these. The signs thickening around us, telling of the near approach of the Son of God, are attributed to any other than the true cause.Men cannot discern the sentinel angels restraining the four winds that they shall not blow until the servants of God are sealed; but when God shall bid His angels loose the winds, there will be such a scene of strife as no pen can picture. [6T 408.1]
Through the Pen of Inspiration, God sweeps back the curtain to give us a glimpse of the unseen. Here we realize that the secular mind is unable to grasp the true cause of the symptoms we see in the natural world around us. Spiritual things are spiritually discerned and may we, through the eyes of faith, recognize that any and all manmade solutions will never address the real problem. The Earth waxes old like a garment, all creation groans in travail until now. The unrest in the environment we see today is merely a prelude as the angels begin loosening their grips on the four winds of strife.
So what’s the solution? To borrow from Elon Musk, the only solution is for humanity to become an interplanetary species—for us to leave this planet. But the only way that happens is for Jesus to come take us!
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. [1 Thess. 4:17 KJV]
I believe we can agree that the signs in the natural world warns us of a terrible crisis yet ahead, and likewise we recognize the urgency of investing our best efforts in preparing for that momentous time before us. But our confidence lies not in science, technology, innovation, legislation, or political power—our hope resides in the Lord.
Christ’s mission to us is just as applicable today in the twenty-first century as it was in the first.
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. [Matt. 24:14 KJV]
This Gospel is what prepares a people to receive the seal of God, this Gospel is what propels Christ’s followers to rescue those unprepared for the Lord to come, this Gospel is what enables us to stand when the four winds blow, and it is what allows us to leave this planet! Taking this Gospel to the world—there is no greater mission.
May we ever remain faithful,
